Yoshinoya. I love the place because it reminds me of the time it opened it’s first branch in Robinson’s Galleria when I was in grade school. And many, many years have passed, they seemed to have expanded their menu but from what I’ve tried, there are only 2 very good things that I eat overtime I’m there. Forget everything else. Order the Gyudon bowl and a Red Iced Tea. And make sure you get your share of the Seven Spices to sprinkle on the Gyudon and the Gari or Pickled Ginger to eat with the rice bowl.

What I love about this Gyudon is that the sauce it was marinated in, seeps into the rice that makes certain parts of it, nice, slippery, tasty and smooth…more often than not randomly. The rice is cooked to the perfect softness to be able to have your chopsticks carry it along with the beef. The beef is sweet, and a lot of the sweetness also comes from the onions cooked with it, which seems to be the signature of this dish. It is so simple and yet, done well, perfect. I can’t really say the same for their other items but when they say they specialize in Gyudon, believe it. I also love the fact that I can come over to one place, and expect the same taste and quality (this is why people have fast-food and franchises).

The red iced tea may look like it came from a food coloring machine, but it complements so well with the beef (almost like red wine complementing cheese). And believe it or not, the Gyudon-Red Iced Tea mix for me actually makes the food taste better. Much like the way a lot of softdrinks make you want to eat more. I’m a soda fanatic, but when I eat that Gyudon, it has to be with the Red Iced tea. The sweet, sour tang with the slight strawberry-orange flavor is just the perfect wash down for the beef and rice.
