Mi piace la pancia! Our Italian Sunday Dinner

I like my tummy. Even when it’s full. But this was crazy.

This Sunday’s dinner was Italian themed, which was a wonderful breather from all the Asian stuff I’ve been eating lately. I knew there was going to be pizza and pasta, and a great few other things that dad decided to put in. It’s funny because everyone came early…or on time this week. I guess being late for the Sunday dinner has it’s own drawbacks – - you miss out on the food and more importantly, you miss out on the stories.

Professional Food Styling Program: Rice and Pasta Afternoon

After we all grabbed lunch at DEC, it was time to do something a bit more complicated. Rice and Pasta are pretty tricky if you don’t have much ideas in mind. Plating wise, no one wants to see a messy slop of pasta and goo, unless that’s the look you’re going for which most magazines and food companies here aren’t into.

Professional Foodstyling Program Day 3: Cereals

For the first half of our day, we made some bowls of cereals.

Cereals are much like soups and salads put together, I don’t want to lay the cornflakes down too much to look like they’re all dead and floating, but at the same time, they should look like they are somewhat floating on…well yes, we used the sticky stuff. :)

Professional Food Styling Course Day 2

After the storm last Sunday, we moved our class to today, Friday so that the students will get used to food styling in the next three days before their individual work and finals next weekend. My, the days came so fast and because the classes were suspended last Sunday, my students had to get used to the idea of styling again. We also have a new student in class, Karina, who will be taking a make-up class for missing day one. Despite it being her first day, she seemed to have put out a fine job at doing poultry and meats.

The students had a semi-tough time getting the chicken, the meats and peripherals ready. But all seemed good enough for the shoot. Here are some of their works.

F&B World Photo & Interview Day

Today I just had a pictorial for F&B World’s Cookbook. My brother and I along with maybe 14 other chefs will be featured along with their Asian inspired recipes. So it was a bit weird to be in front of the camera again, and someone even did my hair and make-up! I’m kind of excited for the book to come out and it was nice to meet all the people who made it possible. Because this is going to be a cookbook, they had a food stylist to do my food, which was weird in a way but it was also nice to just munch around and hope your picture comes out fine, I felt like the client for the first time! :)

Kusi the make-up artist did a wonderful job at my make-up. Apparently, he is used to fold-less eyelids like mine, it sort of is like Kris Aquino’s he says but I always thought she had eye folds…he says his make-up makes it look that way. Taray! ;)

The other staffers were also a wonderful bunch and I had a crazy time trying to pose for my profile shot. The trick to a nice smile is to say “why”…why? usually i say why with a frown but this time, you have to say why with a smile. I hope the pics turn out great, and natural, since I had such an unnatural time trying to pose. Hehe.

Ms. Norma who was always as delightful like in all the shoots brought us these lovely brownies and sugar coated gummy bears! Unfortunately, I lost my pack of gummy’s while doing the shoot, I could’ve sworn I placed it in a safe place…but when I came back it was gone.

And it’s not everyday that you meet a fellow food stylist, and we are both from CIA training I didn’t get to talk to Theo as much though since he was busy most of the time. Benjamin Chan, the food photographer was wonderful too. He showed me some stuff he did for RUSH (not food pics) and that was pretty interesting.

I really can’t wait for that cookbook to come out! I wonder if we’ll get complimentary copies?! ;)
